A Screen That Flashes Through Six Colors Before It Shows You Anything
Six pigments, laid down one layer at a time, every time the picture changes. The delay is the part its designer wanted you to notice.
Are.na, the reference-collecting platform, released Are.na Frame in April: an open-source color e-ink display that slowly cycles through the contents of one of your channels. It was built by Kiran Scott de Martinville, an industrial designer working between London and San Francisco. Are.na sold a small hand-assembled run through its gift shop and published the full build instructions alongside it, plus a long interview with him about how it came together.
The panel holds six pigments: red, yellow, blue, green, black, and white. E-ink works by physically moving charged particles around inside tiny cells, which means changing an image requires building up each color layer on its own, the way spot-color printing lays down one ink at a time. What you see is a slow psychedelic flash every time a new block arrives. Scott de Martinville treats that lag as the point rather than a defect to engineer away. The panel emits no light of its own and holds its last image without power. This generation of color e-ink only reached hobbyists at all because the original Xerox PARC patents expired.
His framing of the underlying tension: more technology, less life. A book, he points out, is also technology. Automatic, unintrusive, no power or wifi required. That is roughly the shift from maximum functionality to maximum well-being, stated by someone who builds hardware for a living.
