A modder took a 1995 Casio day planner and rebuilt the entire inside while leaving the outside untouched. The instinct here is the opposite of the cyberdeck: don't invent a new form for the silicon, find one that already knows what it wants to be.

TundraLegendZ, a maker posting on r/raspberry_pi, took a 1995 Casio Business Organizer Scheduling System SF-5580 and rebuilt its insides without changing the outside. The original guts are gone. In their place: a Raspberry Pi Zero, a Pi Pico wired to every one of the 82 keys, a 480x800 color LCD where the segmented strip used to live, and a 6,000 mAh battery to run the whole thing for a few hours at a time. Hackaday picked it up this week.

The chassis is the point. That clamshell day-planner gesture, the chunky monolithic keyboard, the slot of glass where a segmented display once announced your next meeting. All preserved. The Pi Pico does the unglamorous work of pretending to be the original keyboard controller, so every key still triggers the right software event. They even rewired the factory buzzer to play modern ringtones rather than rip it out. A HackRF upgrade is on the roadmap.

This is the inverse of the cyberdeck instinct. Cyberdecks invent futuristic shapes for tiny computers; here, someone adopted a thirty-year-old shape that already knew exactly what it was, and let it carry contemporary life. What if more of the next generation of objects works this way? The chassis of a 1980s Sony Walkman, an Olivetti typewriter, a Casio organizer, each carrying contemporary silicon underneath, none of them apologizing for looking old.
