A Fortune Cookie You Shake Instead of Break
Three thousand answers, sealed on the board at build time, with no way to add a three-thousand-and-first. The ceiling is the design.
A maker working under the name gokux built a small 3D-printed object that shows you a fortune on an e-paper screen when you shake it. It stores over 3,000 of them and works entirely offline. Hackaday covered it in May, and the complete build is published on Instructables for anyone who wants to make one.
Inside is a Seeed Xiao ESP32-S3 Plus, a matching e-paper display board, an MPU-6050 accelerometer to catch the shake, and a small Li-Po pouch for power. The ESP32 ships with wifi and Bluetooth built in. Both are left switched off. Everything the object will ever say to you is already sitting on the board at the moment you finish assembling it. Two small buttons on the left side reach the other two modes, a dice roller and a coin flipper, operated exactly the same way: shake until you like the answer. Because e-paper holds its image without drawing power, the fortune stays on the face of the thing until you ask it for another. It behaves like a magic 8-ball with a memory.
The original idea was to fit an ESP32 inside an actual fortune cookie. What came out instead is a desk object with a fixed vocabulary and no mechanism for growing one. Maybe that ceiling is exactly what makes it worth keeping on a desk for ten years. What changes about a small toy once you know for certain it will never ask you to update it?
